Debris

2016

Debris is lecture performance (17′).

The performer—an archivist—presents her findings resulted from a research into a collection of unusual objects she discovered hidden in a nursing home drawer.

The archivist lives in a city where one of many unspoken rules is keeping your hair short and trimmed. No one in their right mind would let their hair grow beyond their ears. The longest the archivist has ever allowed her hair to grow is just 15 centimetres.

Among the discovered items—a forgotten diary of a deceased woman, a handful of photographs, a few books, and some glass fragments—emerges a story. Woman’s diary reveals a confession about an encounter with a long-haired individual who identified himself as an artist. This lecture performance intertwines personal narrative and fictitious occurences with factual elements. It invites reflection on the value of art and the role of artists in society. Is art something to be easily dismissed and discarded, or is it something of intrinsic value that deserves preservation? If we choose to keep it, how should we approach its care?

Debris has been performed at the Academy of Fine Arts, Zagreb, and Gallery Klovićevi Dvori, Zagreb.
